Censorship By Another Name?

Censorship often arrives cloaked in a professional tone, as seen in the PCO's recent media accreditation attempt. The withdrawal may quell immediate backlash, but it reveals a deeper challenge ahead: ensuring journalistic freedom is respected in an era when access to information can be easily restricted.

The United States has donated PHP11 million worth of equipment to boost the Philippine Coast Guard’s maritime law enforcement efforts, the US Embassy in Manila said Tuesday.

The donation, coursed through the Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), includes visual detection and monitoring equipment, first aid kits to support fleet-provided trauma care, and an array of tools for carrying out shore-based maintenance of PCG vessels.

US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson turned over the items to PCG Deputy Commandant for Operations Vice Admiral Eduardo Fabricante during a ceremony at the PCG headquarters in Manila on Aug. 22.

“The PCG is on a promising trajectory, and we are committed to support them in achieving their vital and ambitious development goals and in responding to a wide range of maritime challenges,” Carlson said.

Fabricante recognized the US’ consistent support to the PCG, describing the country as one of the most vocal advocates for improving the agency’s capabilities.

Since 2015, cooperation between Washington DC and the PCG has evolved beyond technical and operational training for PCG crew members.

According to the Embassy, the two have also partnered on enhancing the country’s maritime domain awareness as well as major infrastructure development and comprehensive vessel support programs, among others.

At present, the two are preparing for the visit of US Coast Guard Cutter Midgett to the Philippines next week. (PNA)
