The city government is encouraging tree-tending and weeding activities in forest areas as the four-month tree planting season ends.

Aileen Refuerzo, public information chief, said in an interview Tuesday that the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) is calling on schools and organizations to focus on tree maintenance in their environmental programs.

“The tree planting season is over but the forest protection is whole year round and is a never-ending initiative whether it is rainy season or not,” she said.

Citing data from the city’s environment office, Refuerzo said about 12,850 seedlings were planted by 61 groups from June to September or the peak of the wet season.

Tree planting of two seedlings in CEPMO-identified areas is also a requirement for couples securing marriage licenses.

The city government also allows planting of pine, ornamental, and fruit trees in open areas, small parks and private properties. (PNA)
