Censorship By Another Name?

Censorship often arrives cloaked in a professional tone, as seen in the PCO's recent media accreditation attempt. The withdrawal may quell immediate backlash, but it reveals a deeper challenge ahead: ensuring journalistic freedom is respected in an era when access to information can be easily restricted.

The 100 modular tents donated by the city government of Markina have been shipped to the earthquake-hit Cotabato province, the city public information office (PIO).

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro announced last Saturday that he immediately ordered the distribution of 100 modular tents for Cotabato after a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao province again last October 31.

“After learning what happened to Cotabato, I ordered my staff to prepare 100 of our tents to give to Cotabato. What happened to them was very unfortunate so we are extending our help to the people of Cotabato,” Teodoro said in a statement.

He said the modular tents can be used by the affected families “to give them privacy while staying at their designated evacuation sites”.

On Sunday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced that 35,661 families were affected by the Oct. 31 quake and the Oct. 29’s 6.6 magnitude earthquake in 200 barangays in Regions 11 (Davao) and 12 (Soccsksargen).

The modular tents earned praises from netizens when Marikina City used them for evacuees affected by flooding in August 2018.

The tent, which can house at least seven people, has closed sides to give evacuees privacy and comfort while the top of it is open for airflow. (PNA)
