Senator Loren Legarda, the visionary and project principal behind the Philippines’ Guest of Honour (GOH) status at the 2025 Frankfurter Buchmesse, hosted a distinguished delegation of German media professionals for a weeklong cultural immersion across the country.

The visit forms part of the Philippines’ official commitment as GOH at the world’s largest and most influential book fair.

The program was designed to foster deeper international media engagement and showcase the breadth of Philippine literature, heritage, and creative expression.

“Our literature arises from the confluence of indigenous wisdom, colonial legacies, ecological wonder, and global conversations,” Legarda said on Monday.

“The Frankfurter Buchmesse offers our writers, illustrators, translators, and publishers a world stage to be seen, heard, and understood.”

The German delegation experienced the Filipino hospitality firsthand from the vibrant Pahiyas Festival in Lucban to cultural and literary encounters in Bulacan, Baguio, La Union, Iloilo, Antique, and Boracay.

They also explored various cultural exhibits and centers, including the Hibla ng Lahing Filipino textile gallery, community weaving centers, and cotton processing hubs established through Legarda’s long-standing cultural initiatives.

“Germany has long been a gracious host to Philippine literature,” Legarda said.

“In 1887, Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero, published his most important work, the Noli Me Tangere, in Berlin —a book that sparked the first anti-colonial revolution in Southeast Asia.”

Through dialogue with Filipino writers, publishers, indigenous artisans, and cultural workers, the delegation witnessed the dynamic forces shaping a resilient, plural, and creative Philippine identity.

The Frankfurter Buchmesse will take place from Oct. 15 to 19, 2025 in Frankfurt, Germany, with the Philippines as Guest of Honour, creating strategic opportunities for market expansion, rights and retail sales, translation, and cross-media adaptation. (PNA)
