Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and members of her “UniTeam” went back to Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte on Thursday to check the situation and oversee the continuing relief and rehabilitation efforts being undertaken for the victims of Typhoon Odette.
Duterte was welcomed by Surigao del Norte 1st District Rep. Francisco Jose Matugas and municipal mayors in the area.
She was accompanied during her return to Siargao by Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Agimat Party-list Rep. Bryan Revilla.
The vice presidential aspirant was on the island on January 3 with presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to deliver relief goods for the affected residents.
On Wednesday, Mayor Sara’s team delivered more than 1,000 sheets of galvanized iron (GI) and boxes of nails needed for the repair and reconstruction of houses damaged by the typhoon.
In a statement on Thursday, Matugas said 530 GI sheets and one box of nails were delivered by the “UniTeam” to the town of Dapa, and 500 GI sheets and a box of nails to the municipality of Gen. Luna before Mayor Sara’s visit.
A total of 300 GI sheets and a box of nails were also received in the municipality of Pilar, while 200 GI sheets with one box of nails were delivered to San Isidro town.
“The municipal mayors in Siargao Island are thankful to the ‘Uniteam BBM-Sara’ for the aid they received,” Matugas said.
He said Mayor Sara also met with the different groups that are directly involved in the relief distribution and rehabilitation efforts on the island.
In a separate statement Thursday, Surigao del Norte Vice Governor Eddie Gokiangkee expressed their appreciation to Mayor Sara and her team for the aid.
“A big thanks for your visit to the people of Siargao and for the continuing support you extended to the affected residents of the island,” Gokiangkee said. (PNA)
