Manila, the bustling capital of the Philippines, has been identified as one of the riskiest cities for foreign tourists, according to a recent ranking by Forbes Advisor. The city holds the 5th spot on the list with a total risk score of 91.49.

In the detailed breakdown, Manila ranked:

  • 9th in crime risk
  • 5th in personal security risk
  • 7th in health security risk
  • 9th in infrastructure security risk
  • 12th in digital security risk

Other cities in the top five riskiest for tourists include Lagos, Nigeria (4th); Yangon, Myanmar (3rd); and Karachi, Pakistan (2nd). Topping the list as the riskiest city is Caracas, Venezuela, which has the highest health security risk, highest crime risk, and the poorest travel safety rating from the US State Department.

On the flip side, Singapore emerged as the safest city for tourists, praised for its excellent travel safety rating from the US State Department and its low natural disaster risk. Following Singapore in the safest cities category are Tokyo, Japan (2nd); Toronto, Canada (3rd); Sydney, Australia (4th); and Zurich, Switzerland (5th).

Forbes Advisor evaluated 60 international cities based on seven key metrics: travel safety, crime risk, personal security risk, health security risk, infrastructure security risk, natural disaster risk, and digital security risk, to compile their rankings of the riskiest and safest cities for travelers.
