Hot Couture, a free online drawing workshop for ages 6 to 12, is offered on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

The activity explores how visual communication, plus arts and fashion, increase the awareness and understanding of the youth on messages that discuss environmental issues.

The session invites participants to imagine what the planet would be like at the height of climate change. Then, they are encouraged to envision the styles of clothing that would be practical for everyday life in a planet that is constantly heating up.

During their class, the students will be immersed in a reflection on the changes of lifestyle amid the looming problem. The workshop will highlight one’s significant contribution to save Mother Earth.

Hot Couture will be facilitated by Manila-born artist, designer and writer Catherine Sarah Young, who creates interdisciplinary and experimental artworks on the environment.

Her research interests delve into speculative design, design futures, sensory projects, human-centered design, science fiction, sustainability and environmental humanities.

She has worked in various ecosystems worldwide and has been exhibited and published internationally.

She is an Obama Leader for Asia-Pacific, a non-residential leadership development and community engagement program which seeks to empower leaders in the region; and a Creative Peacebuilder for The Peace Studio, an organization that develops artists and journalists to inspire hope and catalyze transformative social change.

She was likewise a Fulbright scholar to the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2010.

Young was likewise named as one of Art Review Asia’s Future Greats in 2018 and was a 13 Artist Awards recipient from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in 2021.

Currently, she is a PhD candidate in Art and Design at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia.

Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Hot Couture is free and open to the public. It will be conducted online on Saturday, May 20, 2023, 2 p.m.
