The provincial library of Pangasinan is still catering to an average of 2,000 visitors every month with its upgraded services adapting modern technology to meet the needs of both students and professionals.

During the Pangasinan in Action forum Tuesday, provincial librarian Cynthia Encarnita Vila said the average number of visitors per month this year is not far from those recorded last year.

She disclosed that 70 percent of visitors use the internet as their research tool, while 30 percent still use books as their references for study or research.

Currently, the provincial library has 39 computer units and the place is equipped with free Wi-Fi.

“When there are more visitors, we limit the use of the computers to an hour maximum. But when there are few visitors then, they can use the computers at longer periods,” Vila said.

She, however, clarified that playing online games is prohibited as the library’s internet service is primarily for research and study.

“Sometimes, we allow them to use Facebook since most students use social media as a tool in turning in their assignments or projects,” Vila said.

She added some professionals are also in the library to review for their examinations.

Nonetheless, the library may also be a place for recreation and entertainment.

“We offer them board games and toys for children so they won’t need to play online games provided they observe the library rules and regulations, including observing silence,” Vila said.

She added some use the library for prenuptials or venue for games, but it should be requested and upon approval of the authorities.

The provincial library located at the Capitol grounds here has a 200 to 250 seating capacity.

In celebration of the National Library and Information Service Month this November, the provincial library will hold a book fair among other activities on November 14 and 15.

“In recognition of the need to focus on the invaluable service libraries and other information centers render, we celebrate every November each year,” she said.

Aside from the book fair, other activities include library tour, library orientation, storytelling, film showing, and many more.

“This is open to all from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the provincial library on Nov. 14-15,” Vila added. (PNA)
