As the nation celebrates Philippine Tropical Fabrics Month, Senator Loren Legarda on Monday reiterated the need to create more programs to preserve and promote Philippine local and indigenous fabrics.
In a news release, Legarda called for continued research and development to maximize the use of the country’s abundant raw materials, such as pineapple, banana, and abaca fibers.
She envisions a sustainable future for the industry where Filipino weavers and garment makers can showcase their artistry while generating economic opportunities.
“These fabrics are not only a testament to the craftsmanship of our people but also a reflection of our vibrant culture and national identity. Each piece carries cultural significance and embodies traditions that connect generations of skilled Filipino weavers,” she said.
In an era dominated by technological advancements, Legarda said the preservation of the country’s local fabrics empowers every community across regions, generates more jobs, fosters innovation, and improves the agricultural sector as well.
“With the right plans and programs, such fabrics will meet consumer demands while supporting sustainability,” Legarda said.
She also urged Filipinos not to forget the value of local fabrics as modernization continues to take over our society.
“It is now the right time that we exercise our collective efforts to ensure that our fabrics continue to flourish and preserve in a way that supports Filipinos, the country’s economy and the future.” (PNA)
