Ahead of the official start of the local campaign period, the Philippine National Police took the lead on Tuesday in a unity walk, an interfaith rally, and peace covenant signing in front of the Ilocos Norte Capitol building here.

Multi-sectoral groups including the church, the academe, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, government and non-government organizations, and political candidates joined the activity aimed to promote peaceful, fair, and honest elections.

The assembly and registration of participants started at 5 a.m. followed by the lighting of candles and an inter-faith prayer participated in by different church ministries. Then, a unity walk around the city followed.

After a simple program, a covenant signing took place followed by the ceremonial releasing of white pigeons as a sign of peace.

“We are thankful for your show of support and participation in today’s activity. Your presence signifies your sincere desire and hope for secure, accurate, free, and fair elections (S.A.F.E),” Police Col. Julius Suriben, acting provincial director of the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office said.

Meanwhile, Comelec provincial election supervisor Joel Gines enjoined the candidates to uphold the integrity of the election process and abide by the rules and regulations of the election campaign.

To date, the PNP has yet to identify areas of election concern in the province.

Since the start of the national election period, the PNP has increased its visibility on major thoroughfares and established strategic PNP-Comelec checkpoints. (PNA)
