Tokyo has earmarked PHP134 million in scholarship for young Filipino government officers interested to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in Japan, the Japanese Embassy in Manila announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, the embassy said the grant amount of JPY356 million (approximately PHP134 million) is intended to support at least 19 Filipinos for the 2027 to 2028 academic year at leading universities in Japan.

The announcement follows the signing and exchange of notes of the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) during the state visit of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to Japan.

The agreement was signed on May 28 by Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya.

The JDS is part of Japan’s continuing support for the human resource development initiatives of the Philippines.

The embassy said it aims to strengthen the expertise of Filipino professionals in their respective fields, enabling them to contribute further to national development.

Since 2002, Japan has supported a total of 479 JDS Fellows from the Philippines.

Qualified applicants must be between 22-39 years old, and have permanent status with at least two years of work experience. The JDS application is still closed, and usually opens every October or the fourth quarter of the year. (PNA)
