Economic ministers from East Asia reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic cooperation, keeping trade corridors open, and building resilient supply chains amid evolving regional and global economic conditions.
The commitment was made during the 14th East Asia Summit (EAS) Economic Ministers’ Meeting, chaired by Trade and Industry Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque and held in Pasay on Monday.
Data showed that the combined nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of EAS-participating countries reached USD69.6 trillion in 2025.
Meanwhile, ASEAN’s two-way merchandise trade with non-ASEAN EAS participating countries reached USD3.07 trillion last year, while foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows from these economies into ASEAN amounted to USD83.2 billion.
During the meeting, ministers exchanged views on regional and global economic developments and underscored the importance of maintaining open trade corridors to facilitate the seamless movement of goods, including energy supplies and other essential products.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to international law and to strengthening engagement in promoting and implementing the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) through economic cooperation that contributes to peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the region.
The ministers cited the need to further strengthen economic cooperation between ASEAN and EAS-participating countries, particularly to enhance regional economic resilience.
Furthermore, they reaffirmed the importance of trade and investment in advancing supply chain resilience. They said dialogue and shared resolve are critical to addressing trade concerns.
The ministers also recognized the importance of ensuring adequate and reliable energy supplies to achieve energy security, accessibility, and affordability across the region.
They highlighted the importance of accelerating collaborative efforts under regional initiatives, such as the ASEAN Power Grid, to strengthen energy cooperation.
The economic ministers recognized the pivotal role of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in advancing trade issues and facilitating global commerce. (PNA)
