The municipal government launched on Wednesday a flagship initiative that reflects the community’s deep-rooted commitment to agriculture, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

Dubbed the KUGI (Kaalam sa Uma, Gugma sa Kina-iyahan or knowledge of farming, love for nature) Program, the initiative aims to uplift the lives of MatanaweĂąos while preserving and protecting the environment.

In an interview, Mayor Irick Agbon said KUGI is one of eight priority programs under his administration.

“Agri, ecotourism, and environment is a transformative initiative that empowers local farmers, promotes eco-tourism, and strengthens environmental stewardship for future generations,” he said.

Having grown up in poverty, Agbon shared that the program was born out of a personal desire to improve the lives of his constituents.

“I will give you the change where everyone is a priority and no one will be left behind,” he said, noting that KUGI is designed to help Matanaweños rise out of poverty through backyard gardening and sustainable practices. The municipal government has allocated funding for seedling provisions and agricultural technologies to support the initiative.

Agbon delivered his 100-Day Accomplishment Report alongside the program launch, stressing the importance of peace and order in achieving lasting progress.

The launch, he said, signals the beginning of a long-term commitment under Paglantaw 2034: A 9-Year Direction, Vision, and Goals.

He also acknowledged the efforts of various municipal offices, assuring personnel that their contributions are “never overlooked” under his administration.

In his first 100 days, Agbon said, the municipal government has initiated reforms, strengthened disaster preparedness, and taken decisive action to ensure Matanao remains resilient. (PNA)
