The Basilan provincial government unveiled a PHP5.3 million solar power project Monday evening to provide stable electricity to the government center in Lamitan City.

Governor Mujiv Hataman said the 160-kilowatt system supplies 24/7 power to all offices at the center, with excess capacity for the soon-to-be-completed provincial board building and gymnasium.

“Our power requirements right now are only at 52KW. So we still have excess power that can supply the new building of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and the gymnasium that are nearing completion,” Hataman said in a statement on Tuesday.

He said the solar panels also serve as a parking canopy, shielding provincial vehicles from the sun and rain. The project was funded from the provincial government’s 20 percent development fund.

“It is more energy efficient, the system is more sustainable, and the provincial government is more forward-looking. Practical, modern, and perfect for our efforts for clean energy,” he added.

Following the switch-on, Hataman also lit the Ramadan Mubarak lights, illuminating the Capitol building.

He announced nightly activities, including raffle draws, during the holy month beginning on Wednesday. Prizes include rice, cash, and a motorcycle.

Each of the provincial government’s more than 1,300 employees will receive a PHP10,000 Ramadan bonus.
