The Department of Agriculture (DA) 13 (Caraga Region) released PHP9.2 million worth of agricultural production projects for two state colleges in the region on Monday.

The projects include establishing a PHP4.7 million mushroom production center and constructing a PHP4.5 million SMART Greenhouse.

In simple ceremonies held here, DA-13 Director Ricardo Oñate Jr. handed over the funding for the mushroom production project to the Agusan del Sur State University through project leader Raymond Gabica.

The allocation for the greenhouse project was also turned over to the Caraga State University through Juven Luzorata, the project lead.

“The goal is to establish sustainable mushroom production in the province of Agusan del Sur and implement technologies for value‑adding and strategies for product innovation to increase value, extend shelf life, and boost the income of mushroom growers in the province,” the DA-13 said in a statement on Tuesday.

It added that the second project, when completed, will serve as a facility for learning, research, and production for the university’s students.

The two projects will also serve farmers from different local government units in the province by using modern farming technologies, including drip irrigation and hydroponics.

The projects receive funding from the DA’s National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program.

“The program aims to strengthen local food production, enhance community resilience, and mitigate the impact of rising food costs, particularly in urban areas,” the DA-13 said. (PNA)
