The modernized fish ports will help boost economic opportunities in Surigao City, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Wednesday.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. made the remark as he led the inspection of modernization projects in the two major ports in the city under the two-phased Surigao City Fish Port development.

In a statement, Tiu Laurel said the modernization of fisheries infrastructure will directly benefit both producers and consumers.

“Investments in proper handling, storage, and support facilities will strengthen the fisheries value chain and generate more economic opportunities,” he said.

For Phase I, the PHP193.6 million worth of upgrade will feature slope protection, covering 7,500 square meters.

It also includes a 10-by-70-meter pier with mooring and fendering systems, as well as support facilities like a market hall and an administration building.

As of March 31, the first phase of the project remains on track at 56 percent, with a target completion in October.

The first phase is seen to improve landing and trading capacity in the city.

Meanwhile, the second phase seeks to ensure proper preservation and value-adding to fishery products.

The PHP172.39-million Phase II features refrigeration, ice-making, cold storage systems for fishery products, as well as commercial spaces, and a powerhouse.

It includes electro-mechanical systems such as blast freezers, an ice plant, backup power, fire protection, closed-circuit television, and communications infrastructure.

Phase II is 32 percent complete. (PNA)
