The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has successfully rescued and released an Olive Ridley sea turtle that was accidentally caught in fishing gear off the coast of Barangay Lual in Casiguran, Aurora.
In a news release on Monday, the DENR stated that concerned citizens promptly reported the incident to authorities, enabling responders to provide proper handling and care for the marine wildlife.
According to Ariel Mendoza, head of the DENR community office in Casiguran, the rescue team conducted an assessment and found the sea turtle in good condition.
“The turtle measured 53 centimeters in curved carapace length and 56 centimeters in curved carapace width. Following standard wildlife conservation protocols, the team carefully handled the rescued wildlife and released it back into the waters of Barangay Calangcuasan,” Mendoza said.
The rescue and release operation was carried out in coordination with the local government unit, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office of Casiguran, the Philippine National Police Maritime Group, and the Casiguran Mangrove Rehabilitation and Protection Organization, Inc.
Meanwhile, Ralph Pablo, regional director of DENR-3 (Central Luzon), stressed the importance of teamwork among government agencies, local authorities, and community members in safeguarding endangered marine wildlife.
“This reflects the value of prompt community reporting and close coordination among partner agencies in safeguarding our marine species. The DENR remains firm in protecting marine biodiversity and promoting responsible stewardship of our coastal resources in Aurora and beyond,” he said. (PNA)
