Pilgrimage destinations across Negros Occidental are preparing to welcome thousands of devotees and visitors seeking rest and reflection during the annual Lenten observance.

In an interview Thursday, Isabela town executive assistant for tourism, culture, and arts Francis Ryan Pabiania said the local government expects between 7,000 and 10,000 visitors from Thursday to Friday, “with arrivals peaking on Friday night.”

The prominent 45-foot steel cross atop Glory Hill in Sitio Mantuhod, Barangay Mansablay, is reached via a two-hour ascent along cemented stairways and steep pathways marked by the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Pabiania added that they also expect 2,000 to 5,000 visitors on Saturday, noting: “We have prepared for the registration of 12,000 people for Glory Hill alone.”

The site offers viewing decks with stunning sunrise and sunset vistas, as well as campsites for overnight stays. Pabiania anticipates an even larger crowd this year, boosted by the popularity of the new “four lanes” hangout spot along the town’s four-lane road in Hacienda Maruja, Barangay 9, which visitors can explore after their spiritual visits.

In La Castellana, municipal information officer Remuel Seladan Lajo highlighted the Mandayao Cross and Leaf Garden and Shrine in Barangay Mansalanao as another accessible pilgrimage site.

“It remains open for pilgrimage as it is located outside the extended six-kilometer danger zone,” he clarified. The town has several villages situated at the foot of Kanlaon Volcano, which is currently under Alert Level 3 following volcanic activity since June of the previous year.

The tourism office in Escalante City indicated that trekkers are welcome to visit the giant, picturesque cross on the hilltop in Barangay Paitan during the Holy Week break.

Meanwhile, the Uphill Cross in Barangay Katilingban, Talisay City, continues to be a favored destination for those seeking historical appreciation and spiritual reflection. (PNA)
