Surigao City officials broke ground Thursday for the initial phase of an ecotourism park in Sitio Brazil, Barangay Mat-i, a project aimed at spurring economic growth and promoting sustainable tourism.

The PHP10.2-million park, funded under the Department of Budget and Management’s (DBM) Local Government Support Fund (LGSF)–Green Green Green Program, will feature amenities and facilities for recreational activities, attracting local visitors, families, and outdoor enthusiasts.

In a statement, the city government highlighted Surigao City’s vulnerability to natural calamities, such as typhoons and earthquakes, due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. These challenges have limited the city’s local revenue growth and tourism potential.

“Limited tourism infrastructure has made it difficult to retain local and foreign tourists, who often opt to visit nearby areas like Dinagat and Siargao Islands,” the city government said.

The Ecotourism Park is expected to create sustainable job opportunities, promote environmental conservation, and enhance the well-being of the local community, particularly in coastal areas.

DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman and Surigao City Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II led the groundbreaking ceremony. Pangandaman said the LGSF–Green Green Green Program aims to develop greener, more vibrant public spaces nationwide.

In 2024, PHP1.055 billion was allocated to the program, benefiting 80 local government units across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Earlier on Thursday, Pangandaman presided over the first-quarter meeting of the Joint Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict in Caraga. She serves as the designated Cabinet Officer for Regional Development and Security (CORDS) in the region. (PNA)
