Another marvelous Filipino talent has earned international applause after appearing on the stage of American Idol Season 21 on February 20.

Filipino-Canadian Tyson Venegas was the first contestant to receive a platinum ticket in the competition with his impeccable performance.

On his released audition clip, the 17-year-old singer sang a soulful rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” while playing the piano.

A few seconds into his performance, judge Lionel Richie was already complimenting Tyson’s skills as a pianist while also comparing the goosebumps he was feeling with fellow judge Katy Perry.

Tyson succeeded doing his flawless belts while confidently hitting riffs and runs, as well as showcasing his exceptional falsettos in between the songs.

His amazing performance has elicited a standing ovation from all three judges of the show: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan.

Still in disbelief, one of the judges, Lionel, even joked that he sounded like a mature man during his performance.

At the end of Tyson’s audition, all three judges agreed to grant him the first platinum ticket of the season, which allows a contestant to skip the first round of competitions during Hollywood Week.

Tyson previously joined a Philippine singing competition in 2020, where he also performed an impressive rendition of “New York State of Mind” while fully blindfolded.
