Chris Columbus, the director of the “Harry Potter” films, has expressed interest in developing a cinematic adaptation of the stage play ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,’ as well as reuniting the actors of the original films.

It’s been precisely 20 years since the first Harry Potter film, ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released in theaters in November 2001, launching one of the most popular film franchises in history, which has gone on to miraculously transcend both the novels and the film series itself.

Chris Columbus, the director of the first two films in the series, informed Variety that he intends to direct a cinematic adaptation of the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, with the original trio reprising their roles.

One of the director’s “fantasies” is to direct a film adaptation of ‘The Cursed Child.’

“I would love to direct ‘The Cursed Child.’ It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles,” quoting Columbus in the interview.

“It’s a small fantasy of mine,” the director added.

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ takes place 19 years after the events of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,’ which was released in 2011.

Columbus reminisced about working with young Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint. He admitted that it was a difficult undertaking, but that with the third picture, ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,’ it grew simpler.

The director also revealed that he still keeps in touch with some of the original cast members. He said he spoke with Radcliffe and fellow actor Tom Felton the most. Felton portrayed Draco Malfoy in the film series.

Columbus directed the first two films in the Harry Potter as well as the blockbuster hits ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ earlier in his career.

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ is a two-part play written by Jack Thorne, based on a story written by Thorne, John Tiffany, and J.K. Rowling, the creator of the Harry Potter book series. It debuted in July 2016 at the London Palace Theater and went on to win Laurence Olivier and Tony Awards later that year. It then made its debut on Broadway in the spring of 2018 and is still being played to this day there.
