“1917”, “Joker”, And “Chernobyl” Win Big At The Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association recently honored the best of film and television on the 77th Golden Globe Awards, held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California on the 5th of January 2020 and hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais.

For the film category, the Quentin Tarantino 60’s–era ensemble Once Upon a Time in Hollywood gained the most wins with three awards for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay for Tarantino and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt.

Tying with two wins are the World War 1 epic 1917, which garnered surprise with wins for Best Director for Skyfall’s Sam Mendes and Best Picture – Drama; the Elton John biopic musical Rocketman with Best Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Taron Egerton; and the controversial DC Comics drama Joker that took home awards for Hildur Guðnadóttir for Best Original Score and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Joaquin Phoenix.

On the television category, the big winners are the HBO miniseries Chernobyl, winning for Best Miniseries or Television Film and Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film for Stellan Skarsgård; the HBO family drama Succession with Best Drama and Best Actor – Series for Brian Cox; and the Amazon Prime comedy Fleabag with Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Phoebe Waller–Bridge.

The ceremony also dedicated special awards to Ellen DeGeneres with the Carol Burnett Award for television and Tom Hanks with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for film.
