In today’s world, the business industry seems to pay more attention to promoting sustainability through its goods and services for present and future generations.

According to an international sustainability platform, sustainability in the business context means “operating without negatively impacting the external environment, community, or society.

We hear the word “sustainability” in discussions about slow living, ethical work practices, and environmental care, but it’s also the word that gets highly involved in the fashion industry nowadays.

To further understand the meaning of sustainability and its essence in the business world, here are five local fashion brands that promote and show the real meaning of it.

1. And Again Clothing

Famous for its upcycled flour sack polo once worn by actress Kathryn Bernardo, And Again Clothing reuses flour sacks and fabric waste to create sustainable and fashionable clothing.

In sustainability practices, upcycling means reusing an old item to create a new product for the purpose of reducing waste disposal.

In the Philippines, where rice is a staple food for every Filipino, upcycling flour sacks is definitely a huge step in making our country sustainable.

2. Munimuni Studio

Born out of the Tagalog word “reflect,” Munimuni Studio is made with the intent to make a difference in today’s fast retail world.

By promoting slow fashion, Munimuni Studio sees to it that every clothing piece is made with hand, love, and care and that every artisan from local artisan communities who works for them is sustainably supported.

Aside from preserving traditional techniques, the brand aims to create a space where “good design and quality meet responsible practices,” which is the very essence of sustainability as a business strategy; the employees thrive too, not just the clothing line.

Munimuni Studio offers various handmade tops, bottoms, and footwear that are suitable for the Philippines’ tropical climate.

3. Tela

Weaving the fabrics of a better future, Tela, or “fabric” in English, is a sustainable and ethical fashion brand that aims to offer sustainable solutions through fabric usage.

It was founded in 2019 by a 19-year-old student named Alyssa, who wants to create a world where fashion meets sustainability.

Aside from the use of upcycled fabrics and sustainable materials, Tela also revives the traditional art of Filipino handweaving, which promotes slow fashion.

In a time where we are surrounded by fast fashion or trendy clothes that were mass-produced and sold at a cheaper price, we need clothing brands that lend careful thought to every piece that they will create, brands that don’t extensively damage the planet and exploit their workers.

Besides their trendy pieces, they also claim to be the first Philippine brand to include recycled zippers in their products.

4. Lazy Fare & Lucy in the Sky

Known for their sustainable but cheap prices, Lazy Fare & Lucy in the Sky is a sustainable fashion brand that uses reclaimed fabric to create various clothing for women.

All of their products are made from reclaimed or deadstock fabrics that are unused and inexpensive fabrics from garment mills or fast fashion factories.

By using such fabrics, Lazy Fare reduces textiles that often pile up in landfills and turn into waste.

5. Kasikas

Kasikas, founded in 2019, is an all-linen fabric clothing brand that responds to the problem of the fast fashion industry.

It uses different kinds of linen sourced locally to produce its clothing line, which consists of tops, bottoms, jumpsuits, and dresses that are not subject to trendy designs.

By using linen as their main fabric, which is biodegradable, they provide a long-term solution to combat pollution and encourage women to consume consciously in their own little way.

With these curated sustainable fashion brands, we see a silver lining that could help our country, world, and future maintain their beauty and resources through sustainable business strategies used by pro-sustainability brands.
