In line with the commemoration of the 124th death anniversary of Jose Rizal, House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco called on Filipinos to draw inspiration from Rizal’s sacrifices and heroism to overcome the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Here’s the full statement of House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco:

“For Filipinos, December 30 is one of the most significant days in the calendar as it marks the death anniversary of our beloved national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. His execution in 1896 sparked the beginning of the Philippine Revolution, which eventually brought an end to more than three centuries of Spanish colonial rule.

Highly regarded for his intellectual brilliance and genuine love for country, Rizal is an epitome of national pride, excellence and patriotism. Even after 124 years, Rizal’s ideals and influence remain relevant up to this day.

As we commemorate this important day in Philippine history, may Rizal’s sacrifice and heroism inspire us all in the face of the worst public health crisis of this generation. His martyrdom should propel us to rise above the pandemic and to continue to strive for a better life for the present and future generations of Filipinos.”
