Movies Remade Without Sound

Remakes are something that are becoming very common nowadays. Lion King, Aladdin, Dumbo, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, just to name a few. There is also a new remake coming soon, Mulan, however, it had been confirmed that there is no music or singing involved in the movie, which would be strange considering that it had one of the most known songs during that time. So let’s get down to business.

First, let’s talk about the original Mulan. Music was used to emphasize emotions and to bring up morale, morale is important especially since the army there was a conscripted army, so jolly tunes would most likely be used. The songs were used during training montages or during scenes of realization or conflict. This brought the movie to be a bit more happy rather than serious, though there were certainly serious scenes throughout the film.

Now, the remake. If they are really going with none of the original songs, then it would take from a part of the movie that they were trying to remake. However, I also feel that it would add something else to the movie, something that wasn’t present in the original. Without the songs, we might get a more intense feeling, especially with the whole theme of war being ever-present throughout the film. I feel that those aspects of the film would be emphasized rather than turned light due to sound.

In the end, I believe that there is nothing wrong with remaking movies without a soundtrack. Certainly, it will not be the same movie that you watched many years ago, but it will tackle themes in a different way; making it a new experience with the same movie. If you’re the type of person who’s looking for nostalgia, then this might not be what you’re looking for, but if you want to see things from a new lens, this might actually be worth it.

What are your opinions regarding remakes without music? Will they be worth the wait? Or are you looking for that sweet nostalgia trip?
